How many decoys do you need for duck hunting?
If you are going to hunt ducks in a serious manner, you’ll usually need at least two dozen decoys to start out. And more is better, since for waterfowl there is safety in numbers. Unless you throw your decoys in a boat and haul them around that way, you’ll need a good decoy bag or two for carrying them.
How does a duck decoy work?
The decoy man quietly directs the dog using hand gestures while watching the progress of the ducks using peep-holes in the screens. The decoyman walks behind the screens, throwing grain or other food over them while keeping out of sight. The ducks follow, eating the food, and are caught at the end of the pipe.
Is 6 duck decoys enough?
On smaller, confined waters, a spread of six to 36 decoys should be sufficient. On larger waters or dry fields, hunters should put out as many decoys as practical. I never heard of anybody scaring ducks or geese away because they used too many decoys. Typically, the more, the merrier.
How do you get high flying ducks to decoy?
Try placing the spinning wing decoys at the front edge of your decoy spread with the head pointing into the wind and towards the rest of your decoy spread. This will make it look like a duck is just preparing to land which can add some comfort to the incoming ducks.
Will mallards decoy to diver decoys?
Puddlers will sometimes decoy to diver setups, but they usually just fly over them and land outside the spread. So, it’s never a bad idea to put a few mallard blocks to the side of your diver decoys. You won’t spook any divers by doing so, and you might get a bonus greenhead with your bluebills.
Do wood ducks and mallards get along?
The Wood Duck stuck out from the larger Mallards, but seemed comfortable within the flock. The Mallards, likewise, seemed to have no problem with the Wood Duck. Wood Ducks and Mallards sometime cross breed and have hybrid Mallard X Wood Duck offspring.
How do you tell ducks apart when hunting?
Light conditions might make them look different, but their size and location are positive keys. The sound of their wings can help as much as their calls. Flying goldeneyes make a whistling sound; wood ducks move with a swish; canvasbacks make a steady rushing sound. Not all ducks quack; many whistle, squeal, or grunt.

How heavy should duck decoy weights be?
4 oz is plenty if you are going to be hunting in cover: timber, brush, or even rice fields. But in open water I use 6 oz weights or even some 8 oz. Thats because in open water you are going to be carrying your decoys in the boat and not on your back.
