Castor beans or mole plants can be dropped into the deer’ paths. You should never use these around small children or family pets as they are highly poisonous. Elderberry cuttings are another option. The stems and leaves can release cyanide and that is fatal to deer.
What is toxic for deer?
Certain plants, such as rhubarb, are toxic to deer. Deer usually also avoid root vegetables (which require digging) and prickly vegetables such as cucumbers and squashes with hairy leaves. Cultivars with strong odors such as onions, garlic and fennel are not palatable to deer.
What would kill a deer?
The primary deer predators in the Southeast are typically coyotes, bobcats, and black bears with the exception of cou- gars and red wolves where they exist. Other predators such as foxes, feral pigs, domestic dogs and alligators kill deer infrequently and do not pose a serious threat to deer popula- tions.
What should you not feed deer?
Do not feed hay, corn, kitchen scraps, potatoes, lettuce trimmings or any animal proteins from animals rendered into feed. Deer may actually starve when fed supplemental foods during winter if they have a full belly of indigestible foods.
What food makes deer sick?
This rapid fermentation leads to problems. Corn is high in starch and a good source of digestible energy, but can cause problems in a deer’s digestive system. When deer eat too much corn or other high-‐carbohydrate food, many complex changes occur in the rumen. Some microbes proliferate while others die.

Deer have many predators, or natural enemies. Animals that like to kill and eat deer include wild canids—or “dog-like” animals—such as wolves and coyotes. Big cats such as cougars, jaguars and lynx also hunt deer.
