Southern Ground-hornbill
Southern Ground-hornbill

The Southern Ground-hornbills are large birds, up to around 90 to 129 cm and not at all shy. Don’t you think they have the most beautiful eyelashes? The male hornbill has vivid red patches of bare skin on the face and throat. Females have violet-blue skin on their throats. Ground Hornbills don’t hop, they walk. Actually they stroll through the bush, looking for reptiles, frogs, snails and insects.

I once saw a family of five in a tree. That was the oddest hornbill sighting ever. Really weird to see a couple of huge ground-dwelling birds perching on a branch.
