After the walk through the wet reed jungle, we climbed up the spiral stairs of the bird hide and immediately heard the squeaky chirps of baby birds. I spotted the swallows’ nest high up in a corner.
We sat very still and watched them for a few minutes and then moved to the other side of the bird hide. There we spotted a large gull eating something. We couldn’t quite see what is was feeding on. I took a couple of photos hoping I’d be able to see what it was on the photo. After zooming in I saw it was probably a baby seal. Have a look:
Here’s another photo taken 20 minutes or so later. As you can see the tide was coming in.
So that was Life and Death in the Kiekkaaste. Great sightings, but not very good light for photography. Still, we had a great day. We also saw Common Sterns, Black Sterns, Yellow Wagtails, a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker, a couple of Grebes, Egyptian Geese with little goslings, and a Western Marsh Harrier.
