Waiting for the train

I was in Hoogeveen for a meeting this morning. I had some extra time on the way back, because I missed my return train. Now, normally train platforms are depressing concrete enviroments, but the platform in Hoogeveen is a very green exception to that rule.

This is the ‘rear’ view of platform 1.

Blackbirds were singing their heart out ….

Bumble bees were a-bumbling … (out of focus)

And dragonflies were a-dragonning

A very pleasant wait it was.

I took this photo from our tent. We were camping on the island of Vlieland. This beautiful young male would wake us up every morning – usually just before 6 a.m. Argh. After a cold and cloudy start, Saturday started with a blue sky.

Noordpolderzijl

I was amazed by the water being almost the same blue as the sky.
This sailing boat was slowly making its way to the smallest seaport in the country, in Noordpolderzijl, the Netherlands. The little grebe was getting a late night snack.

: Sunset at the Dunes de Sainte Marguerite

We had a lovely, but short holiday in France this year. We camped at the Dunes of St Marguerite, an area between the L’Aber Benoit and l’Aber Wrac’h in Finistère. Finistère or Penn-ar-Bed in Breton is located in Brittany (Breizh in Breton and Bretagne in French). At low tide we would walk to the rocks and islands there.

This gull was sunbathing on the rock, keeping a lookout on all things moving. Including me. When he spotted me on my yellow Crocs, he stood up and flew away.

Skydiving

Black-headed gulls against a Wadden Sea skyline. The Wadden Sea is now a world heritage site. Have a look at the brand new worldheritage-waddensea website. Please take a few minutes to watch the video, it will show your how beautiful this area is. It’s a pity the Danes didn’t join the nomination. The Wadden Sea stretches from the North Sea coast of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

Lappet-faced Vulture

Immature White-headed Vulture (and not a Lappet-faced) is on (sky)watch today. Thanks André

André works for EWT, the Endangered Wildlife Trust in South Africa and manages the Birds of Prey Working Group. André has one of the best jobs in the world. He only just came back from 2 surveys in Kruger National Park, looking for the elusive Pel’s Fishing-owl and other fish-eating birds.

Now, if only we could convince him to start a blog, so we could read about all his adventures.
