We were drinking a cold one in front of our tent at Sunset State Beach, when Foeke spotted a huge bird swooping in towards the pine trees, further up in the campground. He shouted owl and we ran after it. We spotted it high up in a tree.
After ID-ing it as a Big Owl I ran back to get my camera and our National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of Western North America. The Big Owl turned out to be a Great Horned Owl, Bubo bubo’s American cousin.
It stayed in the tree for hours. Ignoring us.
